Tips on Designing Your Own Vintage Wedding Rings

If you love all things vintage, and you think you would like to own vintage wedding rings, there is an alternative to EBay and antique stores. You can design your own set! Not only will this give you the look you love, but it will also mean that your “vintage” rings are brand new and sure to last you a lifetime. Before beginning the designing process, though, there are a few things to know. Here are a few tips to get you started.

The first thing to do of course is your research. Familiarize yourself with the styles and designs of vintage wedding rings that you like. It won’t hurt to visit a few antique shops and jewelry stores that carry vintage jewelry to get a feel for what you like. If you get a chance, you might also want to try on some rings to be sure they suit you.

Once you have decided on a style that you like, you have to do a bit more research into the rings of that era so you can use materials that were authentic to that time period. The more you learn about the style you like, the more vintage your new vintage wedding rings will be. Many rings of a vintage age will be made of yellow gold or platinum. Stones may be real, semi-precious, or a combination of the two. Filigree will almost certainly be a part of the design as well.

Once you know what style of vintage ring you want. Try to draw out a design yourself. You need not be an artist for this—just a simple rendering of the shape of diamond, placement of stones etc. is all you need to do.

And now, its time to talk to a jeweler. Find some one you trust and respect, and who has experience designing vintage style rings. If you are using some heirloom stones in your new ring, be sure to bring them to your jeweler when you go to discuss design. The jeweler will likely do a revised drawing, and possible a wax model so you can see what the finished ring will look like.

With just a little legwork and thought on your part, and the expertise of a good jewelry designer, you should be able to have the vintage wedding rings of your dreams.
