Tips to Collecting Vintage Silver Ring Boxes

Proposals of days gone by have created a very special collectors item in vintage silver ring boxes.

Proposing today often involves a lot of creativity. Romantic souls search for all kinds of different ways to hide a diamond ring for the big moment. From the bottom of a champagne glass to the center of an elegant dessert, beautiful gems are magically revealed at precisely the right moment.

From the late 1880s to as recent as 1950, however, it was common practice to present the engagement ring in a beautiful silver ring box. These boxes were generally created by the jewelers who sold the ring.

The easiest way to identify a genuine vintage silver ring box is to check for the name of the jeweler engraved on the box. It will most likely bear the name of a very high end jeweler. Not all boxes were engraved, however, so the absence of a signature does not necessarily mean it is a fake.

Don’t be too narrow in your search either. Real boxes were not only made in America, but in Canada, England and throughout Europe as well. Don’t overlook estate sales offering jewelry from some of these other areas as well. Who knows what treasures may lie hidden there!

Be sure to keep your eyes open for different styles too. Vintage silver ring boxes can be round, oval, heart shaped and rectangular. Engraving ranges from very simple to quite ornate. Some jewelers made as many as twenty different designs, so there are lots of vintage silver ring boxes to be found! Wouldn’t it be fun to try and collect them all!

Some articles may refer to these boxes as trinket boxes. They are often sold on sites like Ebay and in online vintage jewelry stores. Prices can vary from about $100 to $1000.
